SPARTA ‹ One company’s construction debris is another company’s profit margin.

Grinnell Enterprises is made up of three businesses that handle construction waste, and sort it and recycle it into resalable products, including paving stones, topsoil and mulch.

Material Recycling Facilities: A building to save landfills

Proper disposal of construction materials is a critical part of all projects; 70% is a typical target. Where does all that material go? Well, increasingly it goes to large Material Recycling Facilities (MRF) to reclaim the recyclables and save landfills. What kind of building is a MRF? We recently built a 26,000 s/f, 47-foot high facility in Sparta, NJ, designed to handle 400 tons of construction waste daily. While the design was deceptively simple, this is a heavy duty building designed and built to take a beating from 36-ton trucks—as many as 15 at a time. Waste can also arrive or leave by rail.

SPARTA—An application for Grinnell Enterprises to mine roughly 100 acres of soil near Lake Grinnell made a return to the township planning board Wednesday night.

Members of the group Concerned Citizens Against the Quarry, wearing shocking orange shirts, filled the room to capacity, and town officials even broadcast the proceedings out on television screens in the hallways.

But they were not heard Wednesday night, and this is just the beginning of the controversy again.

SPARTA—It’s spring again, and everything’s in bloom—including the red-and-white “no quarry” and “fight the quarry” signs that have sprung up around the northern corner of Sparta in the area surrounding Lake Grinnell.

The controversy about an application to mine the soil of 150 acres of field and forest will be unearthed again May 20, after a nearly two-year hiatus.
